Does
Astrology really work and why is
it still with us?
The
arguments for and against astrology
are as deeply woven into our history
as astrology itself. There are valid
points made in each camp and each
camp also tends to overlook truths
that may, in fact, weaken its own
individual case.
Underneath
ALL astrology--from its very first
ancient beginnings to the profoundly
complex resource it has grown into
sit some EXTREMELY natural laws
of common sense, practical application
and human cycles.
Everything
flows naturally through astrology.
Spring moves into summer, summer
to autumn, autumn to winter. It
charts very real cosmic events--lunar
cycles, eclipses, planetary orbits
and placements. It follows our manmade
system of time because it often
was our system of time.
The very way the signs are set around
the horoscope wheel follow not only
the natural sequence of seasons
but also the natural sequences of
the way we, as people, live, create
and build our lives and our world.
Nothing wishy-washy or metaphysical
here. Just routine sequences rooted
in the reality of the way we do
things.
Consider
the zodiac:
Aries--at the beginning--ruler of
the 1st house.
This is where we start things. Be
that thing an idea or a plan or
an adventure. It is "The Start."
Taurus comes next--ruler of the
2nd house:
The idea needs structure, grounding,
focus, determination or it isn't
going anywhere. We have to 'invest'
something at this point, be that
money or energy or intent.
After Taurus comes Gemini:
Our idea will remain forever OUR
idea unless we decide to share it,
to talk about it, to bring it out
into the world. Which is exactly
what Gemini symbolizes. We cannot
be an island unto ourselves, as
intelligent as we might be we need
the wisdom and knowledge that others
have kindly discovered for us. So,
we learn more, we get input, we
hear other ways.
If
we jump from Aries-The Start directly
over to Libra-The Partnership of
Others we have missed a lot of steps
and often have to go back and do
those steps over. It's akin to dreaming
up a vision we want to create through
art and then handing a blank canvas
to the director at the art museum.
Skipping paces tends to work far
less well than going along in an
orderly fashion.
And
so it goes...from the start of Aries
to the culmination of Pisces. All
logical, orderly and, if we want
to make the most of any given idea,
this is the way things need to be
done. It has nothing to do with
the power of planets or stars...it's
just the way things are. It's the
way WE are.
And
so this basic, natural, absolute
life structure sits at the base
of astrology. We automatically connect
to it because we understand its
truth. It's just the mysterious
workings of the human being carefully
divided and explained using signs
and planets.
Then
it moves into the orbits of the
planets and the moon. The moon cycles,
of course, correlate roughly to
the female menstrual cycle and they
were wonderful tools for making
the most of seasonal crops and understanding
oceans and weather.
Beyond that..the other planets follow
their own orbits and many times
those orbits run hand in hand with
our own human cycles. It's like
a big, moving calendar but instead
of days and weeks these cycles are
the major cycles in our lives--adulthood,
middle life, menopause, golden years,
twilight years.
This
is, of course, a very simplistic
way of looking at Astrology and
the many, many, many different divisions
of astrology have added all kinds
of beliefs, convictions, ideas and
thoughts to these basic outlines.
From the original mundane astrology
that plots society and countries
and external events to the currently
popular psychological astrology
that applies practical, self-analysis
and myth analysis to the signs and
planets to the predictive side there
is something for everyone here.
Each side has its strengths and
equally profound weaknesses. None
can be proven to work in and of
itself.
I
came into astrology with high expectations.
I "believed" in it. That
was more than 30 years ago. I never
went in intending to disprove that
astrology works--I just wanted to
use it--but many of my beliefs have,
indeed, been disprove beyond any
doubt.
What
I am left with, however, is powerful.
It's basic. It's truth. And if taken
as that it works.
I
have absolutely no firm belief or
convictions in the power of planets
or cosmic astrological resources--someday
I might be proven wrong and I will
welcome that day with a great celebration.
What I do have is an unwavering
belief in US as people...in our
abilities to make the most of what
we have been given in life and to
triumph with it, to achieve magnificent
things, to find our own truths,
to tap into the divine, to create,
build and invent a future that will
support our combined needs and potential.
I
believe that the power of our spirit
is profoundly underutilized and
contains within it all the strength,
ability and love that we need to
first change our own lives and then
to help make this world the place
we dream it can be.
A
little astrology...reminds us of
that, and helps us understand how
to take advantage of our natural
cycles and ways.
Stay
tuned...astrology areas are coming
that will help you work with your
chart and your life.
